The Roaches and Lud’s Church Circular

If you’re on the hunt for a walk that feels steeped in storybook magic, the Roaches and Lud’s Church Circular is just your cup of tea.

This 12.4km loop takes you through dramatic upland scenery, with rocky outcrops and sweeping views across Cheshire and Staffordshire. As you climb, the landscape opens up - perfect for photographers and walkers who like a bit of a challenge.

At the heart of the route lies Lud’s Church - a mossy, narrow gorge wrapped in myth and legend. It’s thought to have been a secret meeting place for early religious dissenters and even linked to Arthurian tales.

The terrain can be rugged and boggy in places, so good footwear is a must. But for experienced walkers who delight in history and breathtaking views, this is one of the great walks in Cheshire not to be missed.

You’ll cross old stone packhorse bridges, follow winding upland paths and pass cascading waterfalls that make this route feel wonderfully tucked away from the world.

The moorland scenery here is open and atmospheric, with sweeping valleys and gentle climbs that reward you with postcard-worthy views. It’s a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers alike. While the route itself is moderate, dogs aren’t permitted on this particular trail, but for those looking for peaceful pub walks in Cheshire, this route offers a wonderfully secluded feel before you settle in for a well-earned meal.
