Settle in for a relaxing time

We take pride in providing a comfortable atmosphere for all. Places where you can relax with your loved ones, order quality food and drinks and indulge in treats that brighten up your day.

The very buildings and design of the pubs you visit is central to this, not to mention their location. From historic old pubs like the Barley Mow just south of Oxford, with its spectacular thatched roof, to waterside pubs with special views like the Little Harp that gazes out across the Severn Estuary, it’s all about sharing moments together in places that warm your soul.

That includes once you step inside our pubs. From traditional decor to exposed wooden beams and original fireplaces, you just can’t beat a proper English country pub when it comes to character.

Everything you could ask for

So, how do we make everyone feel welcome? Well, for a start, all our pubs are family friendly, offer free Wi-Fi and have accessible facilities. Looking for dog-friendly country pubs near you? You can bring your pet to most of our pubs, including the Bulls Head in London, which lies on the north bank of the River Thames in Chiswick.

We have special menus for children, including smaller versions of our breakfasts and Sunday roasts. Some of our pubs even have outdoor play areas for your little ones to burn off some energy, like the Cross Keys in Somerset and Worcestershire’s Running Horse Inn

What’s more, we also have dozens of lovely country pubs with hotel rooms. So when you’re surrounded by everything you could ask for, there’s no need to leave just yet. Stay the night in a comfortable room and get snug as a bug in bed before enjoying a buffet breakfast in the morning.

Four of our favourite country pubs

At Chef & Brewer, we’ve assembled a collection of some of the best country pubs in the UK. You can find out more about four of our favourites below.

1. The Wheatsheaf Hotel, Virginia Water

Nestled on the edge of a beautiful lake within Windsor Great Park, the Wheatsheaf Hotel is a stunning pub in Surrey. Surrounded by spectacular natural scenery and only a few miles from the action-packed Thorpe Park theme park, this 17th-century pub restaurant has so much to offer.

Lying on the outskirts of London, this welcoming pub is packed with character and serves up delicious food and drink throughout the day. Whether you’re heading out of the capital to visit or strolling round with your dog from your home nearby, the Wheatsheaf serves up some of the best country pub food in the area.

2. The Old Mill, Brighouse

Perched on the River Calder just east of Brighouse in West Yorkshire, the Old Mill has a stunning location. Not only can you soak up the pretty waterside views when you visit, you can also go for a walk around the neighbouring Kirklees Park.

This dog-friendly country pub’s also only half a mile away from Junction 25 of the M62 motorway, so it’s perfectly placed for an atmospheric pit stop. Whether you’re sitting under the outdoor heaters or heading inside to see the rustic interior with exposed wooden beams all around, the Old Mill’s food menu is packed with delicious British classics.

3. The Malthouse Farm, Whittle-Le-Woods

If you’re in the Chorley area of Lancashire, then the Malthouse Farm is one of the best country pubs near you. Conveniently located for the M61 motorway, this welcoming pub is only a few miles from the picturesque Rivington Pike and the reservoirs that lie below it.

Ideal for a visit after you’ve been walking in the local countryside, there are so many natural highlights to discover near the Malthouse Farm. After you’ve done so, retreat to the pub for a homely meal and unwind with a couple of drinks as you gaze out across the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

4. The Rose Revived, Witney

Sitting on the north bank of the River Thames less than ten miles outside Oxford, the Rose Revived enjoys a stunning location deep in the English countryside. If you’re exploring the local area, then don’t miss spots like Chimney Meadows, Farmoor Reservoir and Wytham Woods, as well as the historic Devil’s Quoits.

You barely need to leave the pub’s immediate vicinity to enjoy a peaceful walk though, as the Rose Revived is on the Thames Path. Pick a direction, east or west, go for a stroll, and then head back to this characterful country pub to fill up on traditional British dishes with a craft ale or glass of wine for company.
