The Virginia Water Circular Walk is a stunning 6.9km easy loop in Surrey, perfect for walkers of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re after a gentle stroll, a jog in the fresh air or a quiet spot for birdwatching, this well-surfaced trail ticks all the boxes — and it’s dog-friendly too.
Once you’ve basked in the beauty of the trail, head to the Wheatsheaf Hotel, a classic country-style pub perched right on the banks of Virginia Water. Grab a table, relax and refuel with comforting food and a drink of your choice.
Himley House, Himley
Lydiates Hill and Baggeridge Trail is a moderately challenging 5.6km loop featuring a few steep sections and muddy stretches – ideal for anyone who enjoys a bit of off-the-beaten-track adventure. The path weaves through woodland and fields, offering peaceful views and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife.
Along the way, you’ll find Himley House, a Grade II listed Georgian building (once the lodge house for the 18th-century Staffordshire mansion of Himley Hall). These days, it’s a characterful pit stop with wooden beams, log fires and a dog-friendly pub restaurant serving traditional British classics crafted with passion. That means it’s the ideal spot to refuel before continuing on with the trail.
Horse & Groom, Writtle
The Writtle and Hylands Park trail is a rewarding 6.5km route that covers a bit of everything — woodland paths, gardens and glimpses of local history along the way. A little off the usual track, it’s ideal for those after a quieter stretch of countryside, whether you're out with the dog, on a run or just clearing your head.
Once you’ve built up an appetite, head to the Horse and Groom — a dog-friendly, 19th-century coaching inn bursting character. With original wooden beams, a crackling log fire, and a well-stocked bar, it's a delightful spot to take the weight off your feet and while away the rest of the day.
Axe & Cleaver, Dunham Massey
This 4.7km loop trail in Dunham Massey Park is an easy stroll suitable for walkers, families, runners and cyclists. With an abundance of nature and history around every corner, you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied.
The Axe and Cleaver is an idyllic haven to unwind in afterwards. Set near the historic Dunham Massey Hall and peaceful Bridgewater Canal, this Victorian village pub is full of period details and timeless charm. Find a table in the tree-dotted beer garden and settle in for gorgeous countryside views and a plate of something seasonal and delicious and seasonal from the pub’s menu.
Swan, Sherborne St John
