Discover pubs near the seaside with Chef & Brewer

Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside – especially when there's a delicious pub meal up for grabs! Or a round of refreshing pints, that'll do nicely. Yep, one of the best things about living in the UK is you're never really that far from the coast. Even if you reside deep in the heart of the Midlands, a seaside daytrip is just a drive away. Plus, with a wealth of Chef & Brewer pubs near the seaside nestled in some of the country's most picturesque spots, you needn't pack a picnic!

Find a seaside pub

A brief history of seaside pubs

Why are there so many pubs by the seaside? Tourism is the obvious answer, but we like delving a little deeper around here!

During the Middle Ages, many coastal pubs started as simple inns or alehouses, serving fishing communities, dockworkers and travelling sailors. With the promise of food, ale and lodging, these inns were often rough-and-ready places, very different from the cosy seaside pubs of today.

Fast forward a few hundred years, and the expansion of the rail network during the 1840s-1870s made travel a lot more accessible to the average family. What's more, doctors during this period often recommended sea bathing for health, and holidaymakers flocked to resorts such as Blackpool, Scarborough and Llandudno. As such, pubs and hotels reacted to the growing demand accordingly.

Although air travel is now highly affordable and accessible, many of us opt for staycations over venturing abroad. After all, the UK has a lot to offer, from rugged scenery to charming harbour villages, where some of the best pubs near the seaside lie tucked away, waiting to be discovered.

Dining in the open sea air

There's something about the ocean air that makes pub food taste ten times better (especially seafood). And when it's absolutely bloomin' delicious to begin with – well, say no more! A generous plate of Fish & Chips with a stunning sea view is our idea of perfection. Or, if you'd prefer something a little lighter, why not sample something unique from our seasonal specials menu? Whatever you're in the mood for, that bracing seaside breeze always does wonders for the appetite. And if you've got the family in tow, you'll be pleased to find plenty of kid-approved options for the little ones, so they can fill up on some hearty treats before another round of sandcastle building.

Whatever the weather

Spending a hot, summer day at the seaside is one of life's greatest joys. However, a trip to the coast during the colder months of the year can be just as magical. There's something enchanting and mysterious about a seaside town in winter. And besides, you can't always guarantee good weather, so you may as well make the most of your seaside jaunt, rain or shine. Our seaside pubs have plenty of cosy nooks and crannies, where you can shelter from the elements and warm up with some hearty classics after a chilly dip in the sea. Don't worry, they say that coastal weather changes rather quickly!
