A history with heart
Fireplaces are a wonderful addition to a pub, providing an instant charm, a soft ember glow and a feeling of warmth that goes beyond the physical. But why are roaring fireplaces such an iconic feature of British pubs?
Pubs appear to date back to medieval times as inns or alehouses and were more rustic and typically unheated. But by the 15th century onwards, stone hearths became more commonly used in buildings, and fireplaces became central features. In fact, for many pubs, they became the heart of the place.
They provided warmth, cosy lighting and a place for people to gather. Brick was once common, but by the 18th and 19th centuries, fireplaces became more ornate with decorative tiles, cast-iron grates, and mantelpieces.
While modern pubs may no longer rely on fireplaces for warmth, they still bring a cosy, timeless charm that’s hard to beat. At Chef & Brewer pubs, a crackling fireplace isn’t just a feature, it’s part of the experience, adding warmth, character, and the perfect backdrop for relaxed catch-ups and hearty meals.
