When is Mother’s Day 2026, and why do we celebrate?

This year, Mothering Sunday falls on the 15th of March. The date changes annually and is determined by the lunar calendar, landing on the fourth Sunday during the period of Lent.

The event can be traced back to the 16th-century tradition of Mothering Sunday, when you would be expected to return to your 'mother church' during Lent and be with your family, and has since evolved into a bigger celebration focusing on mothers.

When do other countries celebrate Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day is an event celebrated across the world, but not always on the same date or with the same traditions. In the US, it's marked on the second Sunday in May and was established by activist Anna Jarvis in memory of her own mother.

In Poland, Mother's Day is known as Dzień Matki and celebrated on the 26th of May. It's a tradition that first started in Krakow in 1914 and managed to survive throughout the wars.

Like the US, Australian Mother's Day is also celebrated on the second Sunday in May.  Both Portugal and Spain hold the celebration on the first Sunday in May, and in France and Sweden, it lands on the last Sunday in May.

What are Mother’s Day traditions around the world?

In the US, mothers are celebrated much like in the UK, often spoiled with gifts or treated to a special Mother’s Day meal.

In Mexico, mums are serenaded with lively mariachi music, while in Japan, children give carnations, with red for living mothers and white for those who have passed.

In Ethiopia, Mother’s Day stretches across three days of singing, dancing, and festive meals, and in Thailand, children honour their mums with fragrant jasmine flowers.

A classic tradition of Mothering Sunday in the UK is simnel cake, which is a fruit cake that is layered with marzipan and often decorated with marzipan balls.

The dried fruit and spices give it a warm and sweet flavour, and it’s lighter than Christmas cake. It was originally a dessert baked for Mothering Sunday, and girls working in service would bring it home as a gift for their mothers.

Why the pub is the perfect spot to host Mother’s Day

There are plenty of ways to celebrate, but we think a delicious Mother’s Day menu is one of the most meaningful. You can come together with family and loved ones, tuck into perfect plates that have been crafted with care, and raise a glass to the mother in your life.

No one has to deal with the stress of hosting, spending the day trapped in the kitchen trying to whip up a feast to feed a crowd. A Mother’s Day menu means everyone gets to enjoy a little of what they fancy, free from the fuss.

A pub provides the perfect warming ambience, as well as a stocked bar so you can toast to your mum with a glass of something special. Stopping by on a sunny day? You might want to enjoy a little al fresco dining in a beer garden

As for food, why not stop by in the morning for a Mother’s Day breakfast or brunch? You can opt for a light bite, something sweet, like our Buttermilk pancakes or push the boat out with a full-on fry up! We’ve got plenty of vegan and vegetarian options too, plus warming teas and deliciously roasted coffee.

And when the last plate has been cleared and the final sip savoured, you can simply gather your things and head off. There’s no need to worry about the clean up, the pile of dirty dishes or how to store the leftovers. Move on to your next celebration or wind down for the evening. It’s your call.
