Nothing beats the charm of the countryside

Whether you're a country lover or a city dweller, there's nothing quite like a break in nature to clear your mind and lift your spirits.

The buzz of city life may be exhilarating, but the gentle calm of the countryside brings a different kind of joy.

Picture the crisp, fresh air filling your lungs, and the only sounds you can hear are the rustling leaves in the breeze or the gentle sing-song of birds. Stroll down country lanes, stomp across lush greenery, or hike up hillsides to discover unspoilt views that stretch as far as you can see.

Be it wintry walks through icy frost, autumn visits with crunchy leaves underfoot in a tapestry of oranges and reds, spring blossoms in bloom, or summer sunshine warming your skin, there’s never a bad time to escape to the countryside. And Chef & Brewer pubs offer the perfect spot set deep within the beauty of it all, with hotels in the country. We’ve even partnered with AllTrails, so you can pair one of our pubs with a walk. From gentle strolls to big hikes, you can filter by distance and difficulty, and even find routes that are dog-friendly, wheelchair accessible and perfect for the whole family.

Why not make a night of it with Chef & Brewer?

Our countryside pubs feel like a home away from home with our warm welcome, our cosy interiors and hearty dishes that feel like comfort on a plate. And if you want to turn your visit into an overnight stay, we’ve got plenty of hotels in the country with inviting rooms and plush beds.

From historic inns with centuries of tales to tell, to quaint pubs with timeless charm, there’s so many spots to discover. Come hungry and tuck into something tasty from our pub food menu. We’ve got small bites, tempting starters, mouthwatering mains and a delicious list of decadent puddings to finish.

You can keep the drinks flowing with our well-stocked bar. Sip on frosty pints or crisp wines. Treat yourself to a fruity cocktail or mocktail, or opt for a glass of bubbles. Toast to a gorgeous summer’s day in our beer garden or curl up next to one of our roaring fires in the winter.

Let the festivities carry you away, and when the night winds down, there’s no need to watch the clock. Your comfortable bed is just a few steps away.

Our top picks for a countryside getaway

We’ve got a generous choice of countryside getaways, but here are some of our top picks.

Enjoy the beauty of the Chilterns

The Ethorpe Hotel can be found in the Chilterns, which are regarded as an area of outstanding natural beauty. They cover a wide expanse of 660 square miles across Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Oxfordshire, and are famed for rolling landscapes, ancient woodlands, and pretty villages with chocolate box houses.

The Ethorpe is an impressive building to behold, too, dating back to the 1800s. It was originally a gentleman's residence and has the charm of parquet flooring and exposed beams. It's also just a five-minute walk to Gerrards Cross rail station, so it's ideal if you're arriving on foot. The Buckinghamshire town spoils you for countryside strolls, with Gerrards Cross Common and Church Wood close by.

The hotel also underwent a refurbishment in 2023, giving the 32 hotel rooms a stylish new makeover. The spacious garden terrace was treated to an outdoor heated pergola, so guests can enjoy the fresh air all-year-long.

Experience heart and history in Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire boasts some of the most beautiful spots in the country, enjoying the Chiltern Hills and the calming Cotswolds on its edge, as well as calming stretches of the River Thames.

The historic market town of Abingdon offers a sense of countryside calm, with great connections to London in under an hour by train.

Sitting on the River Thames, Abingdon has plenty of walking spots to explore, including the Waterways Walk, which is an 8-mile circular route starting at Culham Lock. Enjoy glimpses of the River Thames and the River Ock, as well as the historic Wilts and Berks Canal.

A short drive from the centre of Abingdon is the Dog House hotel. First built in the 19th century as a set of tables and kennels for landed gentry, its unique moniker is due to the previous owner once offering dog-sitting services.

The dog-friendly pub has 20 en-suite bedrooms to pick from and all have been decorated with a classic style that celebrates the vintage charm of the rest of the building. You can enjoy the warmth of a fire in the winter, and the spacious beer garden has a covered terrace for all-weather in summer.

Soak up the enchanting character of Warwick

The town of Warwick boasts a vast history and is surrounded by beautiful glimpses of countryside at every turn. One of its most iconic landmarks is Warwick Castle, which was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror.

A walk through the streets of Warwick is like a walk back in time, with a rich offering of medieval, Jacobean, and Tudor architecture.

A short drive away is the picturesque town of Kenilworth, which has its own castle founded in the 12th century. It was built as a medieval fortress and later turned into a castle and lavishly upgraded by Robert Dudley in a bid to impress Queen Elizabeth I.

Here you can also enjoy strolls in Abbey Fields Park, a stunning patch of greenery with the valley of Finham Brook running through it.

The Abbey Field is a beloved spot for locals and visitors in Kenilworth, with a building dating back to the 16th century and a generous choice of rooms for a restful night's stay.
