The Swan pub is situated in Ash Vale, a rural village decorated with winding country lanes and inspiring landscapes in the stunning Surrey countryside. The star attraction is the picturesque Basingstoke Canal, a haven for nature lovers who love to explore its towpaths.
Ash Vale’s emergence came about due to its important transport links that include a railway station and the famous Basingstoke Canal. The waterway was completed in 1794, built to connect Basingstoke with the River Thames at Weybridge via the Way Navigation and allowing boats to travel from the docks in east London.During the 1850s the army arrived in the area, turning the Swan into a military pub that even had a rat trap outside, which was used as a prison. Historically, the Tupper family owned the Swan and as times have changed so too has the pub. In fact, it has now been completely transformed into a cosy, family-friendly venue.
In 1977, after years of neglect, restoration of Basingstoke Canal commenced and it was reopened on 10th May 1991, providing access from the River Wey to just before the Greywell tunnel. The restoration has provided walkers, cyclists, anglers and canoeists with the benefit of over 32 miles of canal. If that sounds like something you would love to explore yourself, why not take advantage of Galleon Marine’s boat hiring service, which is situated approximately 20 minutes by car from the Swan pub and is opposite our sister pub the Waterwitch pub.
The Swan itself was refurbished in 2006 with a contemporary style, giving the pub a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere, especially during the winter months when you can relax around one of two crackling fires, sampling our real ales.
In the warmer, sunnier months you can enjoy alfresco dining by the pretty canal, and our pub restaurant has an excellent beer garden on the embankment of the Basingstoke Canal serving delicious food all day everyday. Our hearty Sunday lunches are always popular, especially with all the ramblers that stop by after a day of exploring the scenic countryside.
The Swan is open all week and our traditional pub menu and seafood specials always prove to be popular with the locals. You can book your table online in advance.Show less...
