In the tiny hamlet of Beckwithshaw on the old turnpike road from Otley stands a handsome 18th century inn of honey-coloured sandstone, The Smiths Arms. Once a working blacksmith’s forge, this North Yorkshire village inn is bounded by ancient Haverah Park to the west, with its tranquil reservoirs and wooded valleys, while to the east lie the botanical splendours of the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr and the tree-lined boulevards of the genteel Georgian spa town of Harrogate.
Formerly within a royal park of the Forest of Knaresborough, Beckwithshaw village dates back to medieval times. Surrounded by heather moorland and shallow valleys, a short distance west stand the ruins of what is known as John O’Gaunt’s Castle, a moated small fort or hunting lodge of possible 13th century construction. Popular with ramblers, the Harrogate Link route to The Dales Way passes close to the Castle, and Nidderdale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, stretches north from nearby Swinsty Reservoir in the Washburn Valley.
Surrounded by the rugged beauty of the North Yorkshire countryside, The Smiths Arms is a charming country pub with a secluded beer garden that captures the sunshine, and warm, welcoming open fires to stave off the wintry weather. It’s the ideal location for a relaxing pub lunch, with delicious seasonal specials, Sunday lunches, fine wines and cask ales.
About the Smiths Arms
This lovely 18th century country pub restaurant has been at the heart of the Beckwithshaw community for hundreds of years. The pub’s name derives from the terms of the original tenancy agreement - the landlord was a blacksmith who also had a duty to serve food and drink to the local community and travellers.
Until the ‘National School’ was built in 1865, the pub’s upper room was also used as a schoolroom – evidence of this can be seen on the imprint of the external steps the children used to climb to get to class.
Today, this cosy country pub serves delicious seasonal specials, Sunday roasts, fine wines and cask ales. It’s idyllic place to wind down after exploring Harrogate and the natural beauty of North Yorkshire.
All the family is welcome at the Smiths Arms. We’re a child-friendly pub with high chairs and baby changing facilities, as well as a delightful Chef & Brewer children’s menu.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed inside the pub however we do have a lovely, secluded beer garden with patio heaters where they are welcome to join the family.
