Set in the heart of the glorious Chiltern Hills, The Shoulder of Mutton is a handsome red brick, ivy-clad country pub in the historic market town of Wendover. Surrounded by pretty thatched cottages on the brow of the hill close to Wendover Station, this Grade II listed 18th century Chilterns inn is a perfect venue to combine a relaxing pub lunch and a day out in the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside.
Wendover is a small market town dating back to the 10th century. The prehistoric Icknield Way, an ancient trackway from Norfolk to Wiltshire, runs past The Shoulder of Mutton along Pound Street. Today, the 110-mile Icknield Way Path is popular with walkers and ramblers, and connects with the Ridgeway, another ancient route, at Ivinghoe Beacon, just north of Wendover.
The town itself offers attractive walks, with its many timber-framed Tudor houses surrounding the picturesque red-brick Clock Tower. The 13th century St Mary’s Church sits just outside the town, close to the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal - the canalside towpath is popular with walkers and a haven for wildlife.
The Shoulder of Mutton plays an important part in the legendary Coombe Hill Run as the official starting point for this annual event, which takes place on the first Sunday in June. For less energetic visitors to Wendover, candle-lit tables, original wooden beams and roaring fires offer a warm welcome in the winter months while the attractive beer garden is popular on summer days. This delightful country pub serves delicious pub food and seasonal specials every day of the week, and tasty roast lunches on Sundays. Behind the bar you’ll find cask ales, good wine and a wide range of quality drinks and snacks.
