The 16th century Bear Inn is situated in tranquil Berkswell, a pretty rural village on the Heart of England Way. A Grade II listed timber framed building with colour washed brick nogging, this historic alehouse has been touched by major events over the centuries from the English Civil War, when it hosted Cromwell’s troops, to World War II, when Blitz-affected Coventry citizens slept on its ancient wooden floors.

Once known as The Bear and Ragged Staff, the inn was popular in the 1800’s with ‘pleasure parties from Birmingham and Coventry’, and hosted the annual October Stattis Fair in the field behind the inn, where farm-workers came to be hired by local farmers for the coming year. Surrounded by picturesque lush countryside in the leafy hamlet of Berkswell, the historic Bear Inn with its ancient oak beams, log fires and private nooks and crannies is an idyllic place to enjoy a traditional country pub lunch or Sunday roast along with fine wines and cask ales.

  • About the Bear Inn

At the heart of the picturesque West Midlands village of Berkswell surrounded by lush meadows and unspoilt countryside, The Bear Inn has been providing fine food and a warm welcome for centuries.

On approaching the pub, you’ll see a large bear climbing a pole, indicative of the pub’s former name – The Bear and Ragged Staff – the emblem of the former Lords of the Manor of Berkswell, the Earls of Warwick. Once inside, you’ll see this 16th Century inn has retained many of its original features, while adding modern comforts so you can enjoy chilled wine, cask ale or a freshly ground coffee in a delightful ambience.
