There’s loads of great summer events going on near your favourite Berkshire Chef & Brewer. For those who enjoy summer fun with a picnic on the shore the Marlow Dragon Boat Festival could be just for you. Or for those who are looking for something more 'high-octane' The Thatcham Summer Classic Car Show is back with a Chef & Brewer close by for refreshments.
A part of the Marlow Town Regatta weekend, the Dragon Boat Festival is now a major event in its own right. Held on 12th June 2016 at Higginson Park, this colourful annual event is now in its 16th year, and it is bigger than ever, with up to 400 participants in 30 teams compete in a lighthearted day of paddling.
Teams, their families and spectators make a real day of it, and you can join the fun with a picnic on the shore (there will be lots of good food stalls too). For those unfamiliar with dragon boat racing, large canoe-like boats are decorated with dragon’s heads and tails, and teams row to the beat of a rhythmic drum to keep them in time. The boats are as a big a part of the day as the teams competing, and there are races for everyone young and old, including clubs, juniors, ladies and amateurs. It promises to be another hugely fun summer event for all the family.
After the winning teams have been crowned champions, why not enjoy an early supper at the 18th Shire Horse pub, an old coaching inn in the nearby village of Littlewick Green.Reserve your tableFind out more about the event
Celebrating its impressive 161st year, the Marlow Regatta is set to take place on Dorney Lake, Eton on Saturday 18th June 2016. It is one of the top rowing events of the year, and an important lead up to the famous Henley Royal Regatta two weeks later.
Historically the regatta was held on the River Thames at Marlow, but since 2001 is now held at the more spacious Dorney Lake at prestigious Eton College. With plenty of room for ever more spectators on the grassy shores, and multiple lanes for a day of energetic rowing, it promises to be a highly-charged, exciting day out.
University, school and club crews from around the UK and abroad will congregate to show their rowing prowess, so grab a picnic, choose your spot on the banks of the lake and cheer your heart out for your favourite competitors.
When you’re hoarse from cheering, soothe your throat with a refreshing drink in the sunny garden at the nearby 18th century The Feathers pub on the edge of Gulley Wood in Burnham.Reserve your tableFind out more about the event
The Thatcham Summer Classic Car Show is back for another high-octane summer. Happening in Henwick Worthy Sports Field in Thatcham on Sunday 26th June, it’s set to have even more cars than ever before.
It is a wonderful collection of vehicles, and there are absolutely no restrictions for those who want to bring their own cars, vans, motorbikes or scooters along to display. Classic, veteran or even military vehicles and agricultural machinery are welcome, and there is a parade at 2pm if you want to join.
For those not bringing their classic cars, it is a great event for amateur enthusiasts and families, and there’s lots on offer to keep everyone entertained. Local food stalls cook up a storm and there are auto-jumble and trade stands. With proceeds from charitable donations going to Rotary Club Charities such as the Macmillan Cancer Support, it makes this relaxed, friendly show a real must-do this summer.
