History of the Castle Hotel, Kirby Muxloe
The Castle Hotel is located in the beautiful, rural village of Kirby Muxloe, within easy reach of Junction 21A of the M1 North.
It was originally known as the ‘Castle Farmhouse’ - the largest employer in the region producing Leicestershire cheese. However, the Castle Hotel is undoubtedly most famous for its backdrop – the beautiful remains of Kirby Muxloe Castle and its haunting history.
The Castle was left unfinished when its owner, Lord Hastings, was executed for treason. He had begun transforming the castle in 1480, creating a fortified house of red brick surrounded by a wide moat and had been working on the site just three years when he was seized and summarily executed – the reasons for his execution remain a mystery to this day.
One theory is, that in the early 1460’s, Hastings formed a strong friendship with King Edward IV, an alliance that brought him great power and wealth. However, after Edward’s death Hastings was alleged to have conspired against Richard III and was consequently arrested and summarily executed on 13 June 1483.
While we will never know the true reasons for Hasting’s execution, one thing is sure - the effect it had on the unfinished Kirby Muxloe Castle is unmistakable and can be experienced today. With its stunning historic architecture surrounded by beautiful scenery, Kirby Muxloe Castle is a romantic and unforgettable site and well worth a visit.
It is believed bricks and stonework from Kirby Muxloe Castle were used in other areas of Kirby, including the Castle Hotel – so eagle-eyed visitors to the Castle Hotel may be able to spot some of it. The premises still retain some features of its working farmhouse past, and the pub restaurant remains a superb location to enjoy a relaxing Sunday lunch or a pleasant pub lunch with friends. You can book a table online in advance.
