The Fox & Hounds Pub, Lone Barn and Old Burlesdon, Hampshire

Nestled in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, Burlesdon is a quaint village alongside the River Hamble, close to Southampton.  Throughout history, Burlesdon’s waterside location and proximity to lush countryside and plentiful forests have made it the ideal location for boat building. Elephant Boatyard, located in Old Bursledon, formed part of the old dockyards where Henry VIII's fleet was built – archaeologists have even found some submerged remains of the fleet in the River Hamble. In the late 19th century, the industrial revolution brought about the decline of wooden shipbuilding, so the village reverted to farming and in particular, the cultivation of strawberries.

The Fox and Hounds pub can be found down the leafy country lanes of Hungerford Bottom, a small village just along from Old Burlesdon. It’s a historic pub dating back to the 16th century, and as the name suggests, is linked to an area with a tradition of hunting. Step inside and you’ll see that the Fox & Hounds pub has retained much of its traditional character, including exposed wooden beams, roaring open fires and lots of quiet, secluded corners offering privacy.

Seasonal Food & Drink at the Fox & Hounds

Next door is the Lone Barn, also part of the pub restaurant but a very unique building in its own right. A renovated barn house dating from the late 19th century, the Lone Barn was moved brick by brick from Winchester to its present location. Along its walls and suspended from the ceiling you’ll find an eclectic and fascinating collection of antique farming equipment, which adds to the rustic ambience. In the evening, the Lone Barn is candlelit, making it a popular choice for couple wanting to dine in a romantic restaurant setting in the countryside. The Lone Barn also continues an ancient custom of nailing a hot cross bun to a wooden beam every Easter for good luck. If you look, you can still see the remains of previous buns from years gone by.

In both the Fox and Hounds and the Lone Barn, you can enjoy a delicious meal from our superb Chef & Brewer menu. Choose from traditional pub food such as our delicious Sunday lunches, seasonal dishes or weekly food specials.
